"Oshawa deserves more than Ford’s silence,” NDP calls for action while 2,000 GM workers face uncertainty

OSHAWA – With General Motors set to cut shifts in Oshawa at the end of January, another 2,000 Ontarians are on the brink of losing their jobs. Marit Stiles, Leader of the Ontario NDP and Oshawa MPP Jennifer French are calling for action:

“2,000 workers are about to lose their livelihoods,” said French. “That’s 2,000 families facing an uncertain future. Oshawa’s workers built General Motors, and yet, when their future is at risk, neither GM nor Premier Ford are ready to show up.”

“800,000 people are unemployed in our province right now,” said Stiles. “Oshawa has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. If a city with a 9 per cent unemployment rate loses 2,000 good union jobs, the impact on families, communities, and the city will be devastating. These aren’t just numbers – these are people’s lives. Doug Ford is playing the waiting game while our province braces for a jobs disaster unfolding under his watch.

“What is he waiting for? What will it take? Will it take a million unemployed Ontarians for Ford to do something?”

“The people of Oshawa deserve to know that they matter to Doug Ford and his government,” added French. “Oshawa deserves better than silence while they slip through the cracks.”
