Remembrance Day Statement from NDP Leader Andrea Horwath

“Today, Ontario’s New Democrats join all Canadians in taking the time to honour and remember the Ontarians and Canadians who have served our country. We remember those who served, those who fought, those who were injured, and the many that did not make it home. And we remember the loved ones and families whose homes were never the same, from absence or from trauma.

Our veterans and current members of our armed forces defend the rights and freedoms that make Ontario such a great place to live, at an enormous personal cost, with many paying the ultimate price. For many First Nations, Indigenous and Metis veterans, for black and racialized soldiers this meant serving a country which did not offer them equal recognition or rights on their return.

Honouring the women and men who have served our country goes beyond Remembrance Day. New Democrats believe that all veterans and their families should be treated with respect and dignity; and those veterans and their families should have the community supports they need, when and where they need them.

We encourage all Ontarians to honour the memory of Canada’s veterans by embracing the freedoms and rights they fought for, and working every day to better the province and the country they served.”
