Shifting stories cause eviction anxiety

NDP calls for legal moratorium on all evictions

TORONTO — NDP critic for Tenant Rights Suze Morrison (Toronto Centre) issued the following statement after conflicting communications from the Ford government regarding the suspension of residential evictions:

“The Ford Government has been allowing an eviction blitz in the middle of a pandemic. Thousands of Ontarians are at risk of losing their homes as a direct result of COVID-19, through no fault of their own. It is an unsafe time to apartment hunt, to crowd homeless shelters, or for people to have to look to friends and family to crash with. Ontario families desperately needed a legal moratorium on evictions months ago.

On Tuesday, we saw conflicting and shifting reports from Doug Ford and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark on whether or not an eviction ban will be put in place. This shifting story is painful for people who are seeking certainty and stability right now.

The NDP is once again calling on Doug Ford to immediately implement the motion that was unanimously passed by the legislature in December to ban residential evictions, as well as to offer rent supports for tenants who have lost income.”
