Statement by Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath on India Independence Day

Ontario New Democrats are happy to join with Indo-Canadians in Ontario to celebrate 68 years of an independent India. Just as the flag will be raised over the Red Fort in Delhi, flags with be raised in celebration all across Ontario. 

Since it attained independence, India has grown into one of the world’s economic superpowers and a country of vibrant multiculturalism. The ties between our province and India are long-standing. New Democrats look forward to broadening and strengthening those ties.

Ontario’s strength is its diversity. Canadians of Indian heritage make an incredible impact in the well-being of our society, and our province is made so much stronger by the many contributions of the half-million Indo-Canadians who live, study and work in Ontario. 

Ontario’s New Democrats are honoured to join today in celebration with all Ontarians of Indian descent.
