Statement by Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath on the anniversary of the November 1984 Sikh genocide.

On behalf of Ontario’s New Democrats, I want to recognize the anniversary of the November 1984 Sikh genocide. I want to extend our thoughts and prayers to every person and every family touched by the violence against Sikhs in India at that time.

This is an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives and renew calls to bring the perpetrators to justice.

As we reflect this anniversary, it is important to recognize the brave actions of many from other faith backgrounds and communities, who provided protection and refuge to their Sikh brothers and sisters at great personal risk to themselves. It is a reminder that our shared humanity triumphs even in the face of tragedy.
New Democrats support the right of all people to live in safety, and practice their faith in peace. As we mark this anniversary, we join members of the Sikh community across Ontario and across the globe as we stand up for human rights and against violence.
