Statement from Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath on shooting in Ottawa

“New Democrats are shocked and saddened by this morning’s tragic events in Ottawa. My heart goes out to the family of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was killed while standing guard at our National War Memorial.  Cpl. Cirillo bravely served with Hamilton's historic Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders – the 91st Canadian Highlanders. His family, my community of Hamilton, and our country have suffered a great loss today. We will remember him for his service.

We are grateful for the bravery and dedication of first responders and military personnel who are protecting our fellow citizens during this developing situation in our nation’s capital. Today is a day for every Canadian, in every province, regardless of political stripe to stand in solidarity. Our democratic institutions will never waver in the face of threat.”
