Statement from Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath on the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Ontario’s New Democrats are a part of the global movement against homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia because we believe no one should ever be discriminated against because of who they are, or who they love. In Ontario, and around the world, everyone deserves to be safe, tofeel safe, and to be empowered to freely express themselves.

Taking time to mark the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the realities that members of the LGBTQ2 community continue to face, especially at a time when divisive politics seems to be on the rise.

New Democrats are proud to stand alongside the LGBTQ2 community in the fight for recognition and safety and we’re proud to take this fight to the Ontario legislature. That includes leading the fight to ban conversion therapy, entrenching gender identity protections in the Human Rights Code, and introducing a historic motion to mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance with a moment of silence at Queen’s Park.

We mourn those we have lost, and celebrate the victories we have won. Most importantly, we remind ourselves that there is still so much work to do before we can say that all Ontarians live free of prejudice or violence.
