Stiles stands in solidarity with 1,000 Algoma Steel workers facing layoffs

QUEEN’S PARK — In response to the news that Algoma Steel is laying off 1,000 workers — nearly half of its Sault Ste. Marie operations — Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles has issued the following statement:

“1,000 workers just had the rug pulled out from under them, right before the holidays. This is heartbreaking; 1,000 more families will struggle to afford rent, groceries, and Christmas presents for their kids.

“Doug Ford told workers that he would fight Trump’s tariffs for them, but once he got their vote, he went right back to being the Premier for the bosses and CEOs. Meanwhile, his jobs disaster continues to send more Ontarians to the unemployment line.

“We need to make sure that government funding comes with strings attached that put workers first. Instead, the Premier handed millions over to Algoma Steel without ensuring certainty for Soo workers.

“This is devastating. When will the Premier deliver a plan that actually fights for good Ontario jobs?”

Stiles met with Algoma Steel workers in the Soo just this past month and will be there later in December to meet with the workers impacted by the layoffs.
