Liberal MPPs refuse to stand up to Ford's attacks on Toronto's democracy

QUEEN’S PARK – While Doug Ford has targeted Toronto by ripping up Toronto's wards and cancelling elections that were already underway, Ontario's seven remaining Liberal MPPs ducked their responsibility to stand up for Ontario. The Liberal MPPs, three of whom represent Toronto ridings, refused to vote on a PC motion, helping to speed along Doug Ford's election-rigging bill.

"The people of Toronto have been very clear," said NDP house leader Gilles Bisson. "Toronto belongs to Torontonians. They decide who they elect and how Toronto City Council should work. Doug Ford doesn't.

"New Democrats have stood with the people of Toronto. We have voted against Doug Ford’s undemocratic plan and used every legislative tactic at our disposal to stall it to make room for the voices of all those Torontonians speaking out against Doug Ford’s election rigging. Sadly, when it came time to stand up against this government's attacks on Toronto, the Liberals decided to run from the fight.

“I think it’s wrong that the Liberals sided with Doug Ford instead of Torontonians. The NDP knows who we stand with, before and after an election."
