Statement by Jagmeet Singh, Ontario NDP Deputy Leader, and Government and Consumer Services Critic on Auto Insurance Rates

Statement by Jagmeet Singh, Ontario NDP Deputy Leader and Government and Consumer Services Critic on FSCO’s quarterly report on auto insurance rates.

“Kathleen Wynne promised rates would be heading south, instead they’re heading north – she doesn’t seem to know whether she’s coming or going when it comes to keeping her promise of lower insurance rates, and it’s Ontario families who are paying the price,” said Singh.

“There are simply too many broken promises. Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals promised to bring auto insurance rates down by 15% by August 2015. That’s a little over two weeks away. Instead, rates have gone up on average by 0.60% and some insurance companies are raising their premiums by as much as 16% -- that’s quite the U-turn.”

Singh notes that the Liberals also never made good on a promised 8 per cent reduction in auto insurance rates for 2014 and the government is still dragging its feet. Ontarians pay some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country.
